Soil Power! is Field to Table School's newest project supporting the development of composting programs in TDSB schools. With funding support from Earth Day Canada, Soil Power! aims to work on composting issues "from table to field". We recognize that all healthy urban agricultural systems require compost, a nutrient-rich food for the soil.
By turning food scraps and other organic material into compost, we help 'close the loop' of production and consumption, creating an essential ingredient for the rehabilitation of Toronto's beautiful soil. By improving soil quality through composting, we aim to restore local capacity to grow good and healthy food in our schools.... having fun all the while!
If you would like your school to be considered as one of the 10 Soil Power! hosts, download the registration form here.
Save the Date!
To celebrate the launch of Soil Power! FoodShare Toronto will be hosting a day-long gathering on March 3rd, 2010 for students and teachers who care about the environment and want to learn more about what actions they can take.
From Field To Table... And Back Again! will be a fun-filled day for grade 4's and their teachers to dig into composting, gardening and nutrition education. Teams of 4 students and one teacher from each school will enjoy a day of inspiring workshops and good healthy food. If you're a teacher and you're interested in learning more about composting in Toronto, you are welcome to attend with or without students.
