A recipe for change

BY SEAN KELLY KEENAN February 18, 2010 14:02

Pop quiz! Aside from being some of the brightest culinary lights in town, what else do chefs Mark Cutrara (pictured), Anne Yarymowich, Donna Dooher, Fabio Bondi, Brad Long and David Chrystian have in common? Along with a slew of other Hogtown top chefs (25 in total), they’re all going to be at FoodShare (90 Croatia Street), a Toronto based non-profit organization that is working on food security and hunger issues, on Thursday February 25 to cook up a whole lot of tasty support for a good cause. And for a mere $100 you can get in on all the taste bud-tingling, tummy-pleasing and community sustainability action.

The event, dubbed “Recipe for Change: An unforgettable evening of fine food, beer and wine,” will start sizzling at 6pm and runs through to 9 in the evening. Twenty stations will be set up, from which you can compose your fabulous dining experience featuring dishes such as wheat berry, cucumber, beet and lentil salad with deep fried goat cheese (say it with me: “Yum!”); curried goat navarin; and pulled pork empanadas with apple marmalade. And FoodShare promise there will be lots o’ vegan and vegetarian options on hand to please even the most finicky of palates.

Proceeds will go to help with the FoodShare’s Field to Table schools program — which aims to model and re-introduce food education into the Canadian school system through activities and hands-on workshops about composting, school food gardens, nutrition, cooking, food systems and more, for students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Great food; the chance to mingle with local gastronomes and food celebrities; making a difference in the lives of young children and our community while feeding your body a the same time: all this is easily worth the c-note by itself. But the deal gets even better, because beer and wine is also included to complete the experience. That’s what I call one sweet belly-(and community spirit-)filling package.

For more information visit www.foodshare.net, call 416-363-6441 ext. 226, or just mosey on over to FoodShare’s administrative office at 90 Croatia.
